The 26th June saw the launch and commissioning service of Camden Streetpastors at Camden Town Methodist Church. After a service of thanks to God and messages of encouragement from Rev Les Isaac and Inspector Steve Cant (met police) Camden’s four newly trained Streetpastors
Eddie, Jules, Crécy and Nanette embarked on their first patrol of Camden Town with the support of eight neighbouring Streetpastors from Islington and Newham and two observes.Armed with flip-flops and first aid-kit, they split into two teams and perambulated from the Koko Club to Roundhouse, including Parkway and Inverness Street. As they interacted with Camden’s revellers, club owners, shops owners and door supervisors (of not only clubs and bars, but late night shops), they meet a mixed range of responses from; ‘What is a Streetpastor?’ to ‘We need you guys, so we can get on with our jobs.’ The usual suspect look from drug peddlers and others who even inquired about our faith in God. Many people thought it was wonderful that the local churches, where willing to voluntarily help people. One reveller was so impressed with our presence, he asked if we would pray for his spiritual healing, as he once attended church.
Camden’s streets where very busy up until 1:30am, but we continued our walk-about until 2:45am, removing empty glasses, bottles and clearing broken glass of a step, keeping eye on people who would dive off into quite street or alleyway to be sick, and even provided a plaster for a cut finger, plus one pair the famos of flip-flops. Our time pasted peacefully and looking forward to our next encounter with Camden’s night time economy. At the end of our first night all the Streetpastors where encouraged in their service to God, impact on the community and went home praising God.
